I just received word from Fred Cross that John Beckett passed away last night. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but Fred said Lambert Tatman would be handling them.

Another good man sadly lost.

Season Ending Results

We had 74 players participating in a 4 man team 2 best ball format. Jim Bussey pointed out that there were errors on the handicaps of some of the scorecards. Checking the scorecards out, I found that for some of the silver tee players the computer had shortchanged some of their handicaps. In most cases the result did not change the results of the scores but three of the teams (highlighted in red) were effected. Each of those teams were effected on hole number 7.  The scorecards were corrected to match the true handicaps.

The Team of Pat Stoneking, Jim Hackathorn, Richard Board, and Jack Conlon was the top dog with a thirty under par score of 110.

The payout on the green cards was $228.

There were 8 skins (highlighted in gold) which paid out $5 per skin.

There were only two people that signed up to play on Thursday at Lakeside, so no tee times will be requested.

A committee was proposed and approved to meet during the off season and recommend changes to be voted on by the league members prior to the start of the league in April 2017.

If you have recommendations of members to sit on this committee,  please submit their names to me by November 1st 2016. My home phone number is (304) 850-4369. My e-mail is jcmcelhinny@gmail.com.

Results of Final Senior Challenge Matches at Woodridge

The final match of the 2016 Senior Challenge was held Friday at Woodridge Golf Club. We had 12 players participating with 55 total of all the clubs present. The weather forecast was not good and skies were threatening through the first 7 holes of play. Then the clouds began to break up and the sun started shining through and the conditions were fine for play.

We completed the round with an average score of 68.75 to finish in 2nd place for the day. When the cumulative scores were calculated Oxbow finished the season with 11 points, GCWV and Mingo with 10 points each and Woodridge with 9 points.

In my mind, based on play, we finished as the champions when we add the three points that we lost at Oxbow for not having the required 8 players. So all in all it was a great season. My sincere thanks to all of you who played this year.

We didn't finish first in the days results or the seasons results but we did finish first in the Roy Alkire received $12 for a closest to the pin, Butch Powell and Craig McElhinny each won $14 for skins.

Results of September 27th

Sorry this is late. Between Doctor's appointments, meetings, church, and worn out tires minutes have been precious.
Here are the results of league day.

Also this is an urgent plea for golfers to come to the Senior Challenge tomorrow. If we have 8 players and the other courses have less than 8, we will reverse the disqualification we suffered at Oxbow last month and win the 2016 championship. So if you have signed up please come to Woodridge tomorrow.

SMGA Low Gross/Low Net Championship

Congratulations to Randy Walters the league low gross champion with a score of 73 and to Barney Poole our low net champion with a net score of 61. Well deserved.

We also recognized Bill Jones, Bill Dunn, Banks Smith, Joe Tucker, Denny Cosner, and Jerry Kern for their long and devoted service to the golf league. There are still several men that were not in attendance yesterday that will be recognized at a future time. Thanks men for your service to the league.

Is This July or Miami?

For September 13th it's as hot as late July or have we moved to the sub-tropics. Despite the heat, we had 66 golfers participating in a four man scramble. This was as closely competitive event as we have had. Two teams finished at 11 under par 59's with two other teams one shot behind at 60.

The ties were broken by going backward from 18.

The winning team consisted of Butch Powell, Mike Hayden, Tim Swarr, and Larry Clinton.

Skins were few and far between with only four recorded. Could be caused by the close competition. Each skin paid $8 in cash (see Jerry).

If your name appears on the payout sheet have your green card updated by John.

Sorry For The Delay

I'm Sorry for the delay in getting this posted. There was a glitch in the scoring where I had to verify some scores.

It was a big day on Tuesday, hot as usual. We had 70 golfers and the final round of the President's Cup.

Congratulations to Jerry Hurst for his 4 and 3 final round victory over a very capable runner-up, Mike Bailey.

The foursome of Dave Zoller, Joe Cross, Jim Metcalf, and Ken Grose blew the competition out of the water by a 15 under par 255 for a 13 stroke margin over their nearest competitors.

I also want to wish Fred Cross  a speedy recovery from shoulder surgery.

Before departing for your starting hole this coming Tuesday, please gather around the first tee for a special ceremony you won't want to miss.

Results of Senior Challenge of Friday August 26th and Results of League Day of August 30th.

Several of you asked about the results from the senior challenge this past Friday. We won the lowest average net score with a team average of 68.428. Unfortunately we were disqualified because we did not have enough players, we had seven and eight were required. Mingo finished at 68.810, Oxbow at 70.933 and Woodridge at 72.000.

We were given 1 point for posting a score with the others receiving 4, 3, and 2 respectively.

Entering Fridays contest, We were tied for first with 6 points, Mingo had 5 and Woodridge had 3. Had we had the required eight players, we would have led going into the final event by 2 points. The current standings are Oxbow and Mingo tied for the lead with 9 points, GCWV with 7 points and Woodridge with 5 points. Had we had the eight players and led by 2 points a third place or better finish at Woodridge would have virtually assured us of the championship. For those that chose not to go because of the course conditions, the course was no worse than GCWV and the greens were much better.

Thanks to those that did attend, and special congratulations to Jack Conlon who had a gross 80 score with a low net for the entire field of 59. Jack also won $22 for a skin on hole number 8. The individual scores are posted on the bulletin board.

So much for spilled milk. We had 63 players yesterday with a payout of $174 and a skins pot of $140.

The skins payouts were very small considering. There were 20 skins sharing the $140 or $7 each. A really large number of skins for the number playing.

Phil Corey and Ron Sinclair shot the lights out with a gross of 58 and 59 respectively.

RESULTS OF AUGUST 23RD SCRAMBLE

Jack Fleming used to say, "It's a great day to be a mountaineer."

We can say it's a great day to be a golfer at GCWV. Temperatures were mild, sky was blue with scattered clouds, and everyone left with a full belly. We had 66 golfers competing in the four man scramble. It was good to see Mike Hayden back on the golf course even though not yet playing. Mike related to Tim Swarr that he thought he could participate in an upcoming scramble when no one would have to rely on his drive to which Tim responded, "That's what we do now, Mike."

We had three teams finish at 10 under 60. We broke the ties as usual by going back from 18 to determine the winner. The team of Jim Bussey, Pete DePond, Larry Britton, and Ralph Olander emerged in first place followed by second place team of Willis Hughes, Don Kern, and Richard Board, and the third place team of Fred Cross, Larry Clinton, Larry Pfieffer, and Harry Callander. The team of Mike Poling, Ralph Bickle, Olaf O'Dell, and Bill Gavin finished in fourth by one shot at 61.

August 16th 2016 Results

This was the third year for the three clubs and a putter event. Attendance was a little lower but those that played enjoyed the change. Playing this format gives you a chance to experiment with shots you wouldn't ordinarily try. You can learn something to use when you have a full bag.

We had 57 players. The payout was $171 with $114 paid out for 15 skins. If your name appears on the payout list, see John to get your green card credited.

Also enclosed below is a list of the August 15th handicap updates.

Next week will be a four man team scramble with a cookout to follow play. Menu will consist of grilled chicken tenders, stuffing, and sliced tomatoes, and drinks. Don't miss this one.

Also, in case you haven't looked at the bulletin board two events are coming up. Next Friday is the 3rd round of the Senior Challenge at Oxbow. There is a signup sheet on the bulletin board. We need your help in this one, consider playing and signup.

The second event is a road trip to Massillon, Ohio to play the legends golf course on Thursday September 1st. We have tee times for 28 players with 22 now signed up. My information is this is a great course and a real fun trip. That signup sheet is also on the board.

Texas Scramble Number Two

What a day. It was hot as a Texas afternoon with scores and passions heated as well. Team number 10 with Butch Powell, Denny Cosner, Jerry Mason, and Ken Grose set the fairways on fire with a scorching 49 under par 231. They were followed closely by team number 13 made up of Lonnie Casto, Mike Woodyard, and Phil Corey who melted the flags with a 45 under score of 235.

Passions were hot as well as Hard Hearted Ron Warhoop was selling out his buddy Jim Stidham with cries of "disqualify him." Jim was conceding his drive to the others in the foursome then was hitting a drive that would not count from the silver tees. So much for friendship.

There were 74 golfers playing with a total payout of $220. $146 went into the skins pool to be split by 8 team skins.

The skins are highlighted in yellow on the following score sheets.
