Mike Siddall defeated Joe Tucker; Mike Poling over Roger Goddard; Jerry Hurst defeated Joe Cross; Mike Bailey over Ralph Olander; Denney Cosner over Bob Forbes; Ed Davis over Jim Reynolds; Bill Hupp over Fred Fenton; and  Roy Alkire over Jim Stidham.

Willis Hughes and Ron Warfield decided to play their second round match early with Willis Winning over Ron to move to the quarter final round.

We have the Red, White, and Blue scramble next week so second round play in the President's Cup will resume on July 12th with the following matches - Siddall vs reigning champion Dave Zoller; Poling vs Jerry Kern; Hurst vs Jim Kennedy; Bailey vs. Roger Crowley; Cosner vs. Barney Poole; Davis vs. Jim Taylor; and Hupp vs. Alkire.

We had 73 golfers out yesterday with hot but beautiful conditions. Results were as usual great for some and not so great for others.
Jack Jones must have been full of excitement over his upcoming cruise to Alaska as it carried over to his golf game with a scintillating  83 gross and 58 net. John Beckett had a great round of 85 with a 26 handicap netting to 59.

Roger Crowley wanted me to remind everyone about the 1st Wood Lions Senior Golf Tournament on Friday July 8th here at GCWV.
It will be a two man team with a shotgun start. Entry fee is $100 per team. Front nine will be best ball while back nine will be a two man scramble. It will be flighted with payouts to the first place team in each flight.

Just a reminder. There seems to be some confusion that I will be gone next week. I will be gone only on Monday July 4th. I will do the pairings on Sunday and have them done by 5 pm. If you want to be included in the pairings make sure I know it by Sunday at 5

President's Cup

We currently have thirteen golfers signed up for the President's Cup match play tournament. If you have never played in a match play event it is a lot of fun. In match play you play to win the hole. The golfer winning the most holes wins the match and advances to play another opponent in the next round. Play continues until the champion is the last one left.

We will start play this Tuesday. The nice thing about this tournament is it is played within the framework of the regular league play. It doesn't take an additional day or round.

The last day to sign up will be 5 pm this Sunday June 26th.

If you want to sign up contact me by e-mail at jcmcelhinny@gmail.com or by phone at (304) 850-4369.

You can also use this webpage comments to signup.

June 21, 2016 Results

The thunderstorms stayed away but the heat and humidity stayed with us and made it uncomfortable.

The heat didn't hurt those with handicaps of 19 or higher. Maybe they were the cause of the high temperatures as they were on-fire. I wouldn't call anyone a sandbagger but Mike Poling would.

Congratulations to Danny Quisenberry who broke out of a beginners slump to record a fine 89 for a 54 net (bet your handicap will come down.) Other handicaps that are sure to drop are Ed Davis who had a lifetime best round of 76 with a 55 net, Guy Lynch with a net of 58, and Ken Grose who also had a net 58.

We had 71 Golfers participating with a payout of $213 and 14 skins splitting a pool of $140.

Memorial Tournament Low Gross Winner Butch Powell

Low Net Memorial Tournament Winner Joe Cross

June 17th Senior Challenge Results

I want to thank each one of you for participating with a special thanks to the first timers. We played great but came up slightly short.

The highlight of the day was Jim Taylor winning both proximity and a skin on hole 18 with an ACE. Yes, that's right Jim had a hole in one on 18. The result of that shot was $15 for the proximity and $25 for the skin. So the tee shot won him $40. Nice effort.

Standings after the first event are:

                    AVG         Points
Oxbow         64.833         4
GCWV        66.500          3
Woodridge  68.071          2
Mingo         68.571          1

This is the fourth time in the last five events we have finished second. Take heart guys our day is coming when we will break through. One of the comments made when we were making up the pairings was "gosh, you guys sure have a bunch of good players."     Other clubs are acknowledging the quality of our play.

The next event is Friday July 15th at Mingo. The sign up sheet will be on the bulletin board soon. If you haven't played before, give joining us a lot of thought

Week 11Results

The Texas scramble is over, the pizza has been eaten and the results are complete.

Mike Poling and company steamrolled the group and anyone that got in their way (hitting Bill Jones on the 6th green with an errant tee shot). So much for intimidating your competitors. By the way they shot an amazing 233 or 47 shots below par.

We had 78 golfers playing and conditions were great, Thanks again to Domino's Pizza (Vienna Store). The pizza was great and right on time.

There were 11 skins dividing $154 44 ways. Each skin would be worth  about $3. Harry Callandar knows when to win and when to hold backRight Harry?

Talk about greedy, Ron Warfield replaces Joe Cross as the biggest sandbagger we have. Ron hits from the silver tees and still uses a 14 handicap, but that isn't all. He tried to take another stroke on number 16 for a 15th unauthorized and unearned stroke. Nice try but you got caught.

Walker Cup Results.

We had 67 golfers pursuing the Walker Cup today. The winning team was made up of Pat Stoneking, Dennis Cosner, Cal Wagner, and Phil Corey. Total Payout was $200. The skins pool was $136 dollars split among 4 teams.

The results of the decision on the maximum number of putts on Hole 11 remained at 2 putts.

Be sure to signup for next weeks event which will be a Texas scramble followed by pizza.

Wednesday June 8th. Today I ordered the pizzas for next weeks event. Thanks to Dennis Denman of Domino's we are getting very good pizzas at a very good price from a very responsible supplier. The pizzas will be coming from the Vienna store.

Below is their present menu with coupons for special pricing. If you are looking for good pizza, please remember that Domino's is the one supporting our league.

We had 72 golfers out today and wonderful weather. Results continue to improve as the conditions improve. Jim Bywaters and Butch Powell both shot a gross score of 74 with Butch capturing the Low Gross championship of the Memorial Tournament on a tie-breaker.

Joe Cross wins the championship of the Sandbagger (Low Net) portion of the Memorial with a gross of 78 and a net of 60. Shame on you, you big sandbagger.

We paid $216 to the top twenty places, and 18 skins dividing up $144.
