RESULTS OF AUGUST 23RD SCRAMBLE

Jack Fleming used to say, "It's a great day to be a mountaineer." 

We can say it's a great day to be a golfer at GCWV. Temperatures were mild, sky was blue with scattered clouds, and everyone left with a full belly. We had 66 golfers competing in the four man scramble. It was good to see Mike Hayden back on the golf course even though not yet playing. Mike related to Tim Swarr that he thought he could participate in an upcoming scramble when no one would have to rely on his drive to which Tim responded, "That's what we do now, Mike."

We had three teams finish at 10 under 60. We broke the ties as usual by going back from 18 to determine the winner. The team of Jim Bussey, Pete DePond, Larry Britton, and Ralph Olander emerged in first place followed by second place team of Willis Hughes, Don Kern, and Richard Board, and the third place team of Fred Cross, Larry Clinton, Larry Pfieffer, and Harry Callander. The team of Mike Poling, Ralph Bickle, Olaf O'Dell, and Bill Gavin finished in fourth by one shot at 61.

August 16th 2016 Results

This was the third year for the three clubs and a putter event. Attendance was a little lower but those that played enjoyed the change. Playing this format gives you a chance to experiment with shots you wouldn't ordinarily try. You can learn something to use when you have a full bag.

We had 57 players. The payout was $171 with $114 paid out for 15 skins. If your name appears on the payout list, see John to get your green card credited.

Next week will be a four man team scramble with a cookout to follow play. Menu will consist of grilled chicken tenders, stuffing, and sliced tomatoes, and drinks. Don't miss this one.

Also, in case you haven't looked at the bulletin board two events are coming up. Next Friday is the 3rd round of the Senior Challenge at Oxbow. There is a signup sheet on the bulletin board. We need your help in this one, consider playing and signup.

The second event is a road trip to Massillon, Ohio to play the legends golf course on Thursday September 1st. We have tee times for 28 players with 22 now signed up. My information is this is a great course and a real fun trip. That signup sheet is also on the board. 

Texas Scramble Number Two

What a day. It was hot as a Texas afternoon with scores and passions heated as well. Team number 10 with Butch Powell, Denny Cosner, Jerry Mason, and Ken Grose set the fairways on fire with a scorching 49 under par 231. They were followed closely by team number 13 made up of Lonnie Casto, Mike Woodyard, and Phil Corey who melted the flags with a 45 under score of 235.

Passions were hot as well as Hard Hearted Ron Warhoop was selling out his buddy Jim Stidham with cries of "disqualify him." Jim was conceding his drive to the others in the foursome then was hitting a drive that would not count from the silver tees. So much for friendship.  

There were 74 golfers playing with a total payout of $220. $146 went into the skins pool to be split by 8 team skins.

Results For July 26, 2016

Temperatures were in the 90's and the humidity was off the chart, but all but one person completed the round.  Cold water was in high demand. Ed Davis and Fred Cross were as hot as the thermometer. Ed fired a net 61 while Fred was close behind, having a net 63.

There has been some concern that the prize money has not been equally divided between the three groups. If you look closely at the summary below, you can see how the money winners were divided by A, B, or C. There is an indication to the left of each name.

There were three President's Cup matches completed Tuesday.

Ed Davis defeated Roy Alkire; Jerry Hurst defeated Mike Poling; and Mike Siddall defeated Dave Zoller to move into the semi-finals along with Willis Hughes.

My mistake, Mike Siddall will face Willis Hughes with the winner moving on to face Jerry Hurst in the semis. While the other half of the semi-finals will have Mike Bailey facing Ed Davis.

Also on August 9th we will be having individual play with ABC skins, but there will be a slight change. As an experiment, we will divide the field into thirds. Instead of dividing the field along exact handicap lines, we will divide it into equal portions. This may mean that some people with the same handicaps will be in separate groups. The division will break along with your index number rather than along equal handicaps. Prize money will then be split equally among the three groups. This will be just a test and we can see how the results work out.

I want to mention again, If you have signed up and barring an emergency please don't leave us hanging by being a no show. This creates havoc among the pairings. This caused a log jam after a few holes with threesomes trailing foursomes that they thought were slow. That and the heat caused some tempers to flare. All of it could have been avoided if the players had been present or at least called early enough for us to have made better placement of players.

This coming week we will be having a Texas Scramble which everyone seemed to enjoy several weeks ago.

Results of Fox Ball Scramble July 19, 2016

We had 70 players out yesterday for our Fox Ball scramble. It was uncomfortably hot and humid. Afterward everyone seemed to enjoy the air conditioned comfort of our All-American lunch consisting of Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Corn-on-the-cob, Apple pie, and Ice Cream. Everything was there except the Chevrolet. The hot rods were on the course as two teams burned it up with 10 under par 60's. The winning team of Jim Bussey, Mike Hayden, and Dave Zoller won it on a 17th hole tiebreaker birdie over the team of Pat Stoneking, Don Swisher, and Banks Smith.

Jerry Hurst sank the long putt on number one. Joe Cross,  Ed Davis, and Pat Stoneking won the closest to the pins on numbers 2, 12, and 18.

Amazingly there was only one skin among the 18 groups. The team of Mike Poling, Jerry Kern, Olaf O'dell, and Earl Havens will split the skins money with an eagle on number 13.

Both of the top groups returned their fox ball and will split the fox ball money with the third place team Bob Forbes, Joe Cross, Larry Pfieffer, and Barney Poole.

  

Mingo Senior Challenge Results

We had a fine day at Mingo today lead by our war horses Mike Poling, Randy Walters, and Butch Powell. Our net average was 69.714 against a par 72 golf course. As good as it was, we were not able to overcome the home team - Mingo Bottom who had a net average of 66.286.

Our second place effort today moved us into a tie with Oxbow for first place after two events. The next event will be at Oxbow and with a good turnout and another good effort we well could find ourselves in first place with the final event in front of us.

If anyone sees Warfield or Stidham remind them that they owe me $28 each for the green fees, cart, and awards. They tried to have breakfast at the Mountaineer and arrived just as the carts were leaving and they left just as fast when the round was over. I think they might have left part  of their breakfast on the table and were heading back to finish it.

Tuesday July 12, 2016 Results

Today was high adventure day - survive heat and humidity and complete a golf round; brave the wild beasts. But there were 70 brave and unyielding golfers unwilling to let the conditions beat them. We don't know what the beast was but it was last seen with Roger Crowley in hot pursuit. We argued whether it was a mink or a ferret, but it was certainly a member of the weasel family. The coat was a golden color, it was about 30 inches long and estimated to weigh about 3 to 4 pounds. If you know what it was let us know.

As for the golf, there were some very good rounds. Mike Riggs lead the day with an 80 coupled with a 19 handicap.

Don't forget we have another Senior Challenge at Mingo this Friday. Starting time is 8 AM with registration at 7:30 AM. The signup sheet is on the bulletin board (a yellow signup sheet). I need to complete the pairings with the other clubs on Thursday at 4 pm.

Don't miss this coming week, we are in for a lot of fun with the Fox Ball Scramble and the All- American cookout consisting of hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, apple pie and ice cream.
